Microsoft Teams: File Recovery

Summary

How to restore a file that was accidentally or mysteriously deleted from Microsoft Teams.

Body

Issue

You've accidentally deleted a Microsoft Teams file and need to get it back.

Environment

This article applies to users with desktop Microsoft Teams. This is only applied to desktop/tablet users, NOT mobile users.

Resolution

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click on the Teams tab on the left-hand side of your screen.

  1. Click on the team your file was deleted within, for me this was Service Desk. Then choose any section within the drop down list. In this example I chose the Trainings section.

3a. If there are no sections underneath your team, try clicking the arrow on the left of the team icon to see more sections.

  1. At the top of your screen, click the Files tab.

  1. After opening the files Tab, you should see a new bar starting with “New” inside a purple box. Go to the far-right side of this bar and click where you see 3 dots. Choose the “Open in SharePoint” option.

5a. * If your Teams window is large, you might not see 3 dots. Instead, just click on “Open in SharePoint” *

  1. This should have opened a SharePoint tab in your browser. From here go the left-hand side of your browser and click on “Recycle Bin”.

  1. Right click on the deleted file you need and choose the option “Restore”. Your file should now be in Teams. This may take a moment to update. Please make sure to refresh the tab within your browser to confirm that the file is not in the Recycle bin anymore.
