Cellphone & Tablet (Android: Smart Switch - How to Use Smart Switch to Transfer Data to Another Phone or Tablet

Issue

You received a new or replacement device that you need to move data to.

Environment

Phones and Tablets using Android Operating System

Resolution

1. Transfer Cellular Service to New Device (may not apply to tablets): If you received a phone in the original box, open the box, and take the pin located on the backside of the cardboard/paper pocket underneath your phone (see image below). Insert this pin in the hole on the side or top of your old phone to take out the SIM card. Once you take the SIM card out, place it in your new phone. The hole for your SIM tray may be on the top, bottom or side of your device. You will need to look for a small hole with an oval cut outline to find the tray. You can also do the SIM swap after completing the data transfer. If you run into errors with Verizon asking to activating your line, please take the SIM out and proceed with using Wi-Fi.

*NOTE*

Your old phone may have a 4G SIM. To utilize the 5G service, you will need a 5G SIM, which may be included with your new device. Utilizing 5G service will improve data speeds and offer better service coverage. If you wish to utilize your 5G SIM, you will need to call MIS to update the SIM on your mobile line before your service will work.

2. Ensure both the new phone and old phone are ON and connected to the same Wi-Fi Network. EC_Company Guest Wi-Fi Network. If you do not have a password for the Guest Network, reach out to MIS and we can setup an account for you. After verifying that both phones are connected to the same Wi-Fi, look for the “Smart Switch” App. You will open this on both devices.

3. After locating and opening Smart Switch on both devices, you may have to accept permissions. Accept the permissions and follow the prompts until you get to the screen where it says, “Select a source”. You will choose “Galaxy” if you’re transferring from an Android to an Android. After selecting the source, you will see “Transfer your data”. On your old phone you will choose “Send data” and on your new phone you will choose “Receive data”.

4. Next, your phones will ask how you want to connect, choose "Wireless". If you have a USB-C to USB-C cable you can select the "Cable" option. They will try and connect, at which point you will choose “Connect”.

5. Once connected, it will ask you what data you would like to transfer. You can choose “Everything”, or you can choose “Custom”. We recommend selecting "Everything", but if there are some things you don’t care about, like pictures, which you may have a lot of, you can opt out of that option to speed up the transferring process. Once you choose everything, the process will begin. (The transfer can take anywhere from 5-35+ minutes depending on the amount of data you are transferring)

6. Throughout the transfer process you may get prompts that you must answer to continue. If it asks to “Transfer accounts”, skip this by selecting "don’t transfer". For Google related prompts, please "Accept" and continue. For Verizon services, "Accept" and continue. For the Samsung Account, select "Skip".

7. After following the prompts you should eventually reach the home screen. If you swipe down on your notification bar you will see the progress bar of the data transfer progress. Once it is done transferring data, it will begin to organize the data. Please note that all of your data may not be accessible until it has completed organizing your data. Smart Switch should notify you when the transfer is complete.

8. Great work, you are done! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the MIS Service Desk at emis-servicedesk@ecpowerslife.com, or call at (503) 552-5500.
